AIR POLLUTION
Electronic waste (e-waste) contains harmful materials such as lead, mercury, beryllium, arsenic, cadmium, etc. E-waste is often burned to break down the plastics and expose precious metals. Through this burning, toxic fumes are released into the air of surrounding communities. Breathing this air has serious health implications. This toxic smoke also contributes to the greenhouse effect which is a leading factor in the climate change crisis.
SOIL POLLUTION
As e-waste breaks down, it releases toxic heavy metals. These metals leach into the soil and influence the plants, trees, and crops that are growing in nearby areas. In this way, the toxins enter the food supply of the surrounding community. Ingesting these toxins can lead to health complications, hamper development for children, and cause birth defects. Exposure to these metals is especially dangerous for pregnant women and children.
WATER POLLUTION
The toxins leached from electronic waste often enters groundwater. This groundwater is connected to rivers, lakes, ponds, and surface streams. Many animals and people rely on these sources of water for nourishment, so these toxins compromise the health of the entire ecosystem.
